Herman Miller, Inc., a pioneer in sustainable architecture and interiors, has added ecoScorecard to its tools and resources that assist architects and interior designers in building green. Herman Miller is the first major contract furniture manufacturer to incorporate ecoScorecard in its product catalogue to deliver the environmental documentation end users need. The company will be demonstrating ecoScorecard functionality to visitors in its NeoCon 2010 showroom (#321).

ecoScorecard is a free, web-based technology platform that gives product manufacturers the ability to provide environmental information and sustainability documentation about products for all major third-party rating systems.

“Herman Miller realizes that sustainability is a shared responsibility,” said Martin Flaherty, president of ecoScorecard. “By simplifying the rating systems documentation process and identifying product environmental metrics, the ecoScorecard tool allows Herman Miller and product specifiers to work together to achieve sustainability goals.”

Herman Miller’s ecoScorecard site features a training video featuring Mary Kathryn German, Herman Miller A+D representative in Atlanta. Commenting on the new capability, Mary Kathryn notes, “Designers spend hours, if not weeks, pulling together LEED documentation. Now, designers and architects can go directly to our site, access ecoScorecard and start researching our green product offerings, perform calculations and produce LEED documentation in a matter of minutes.”

Paul Murray, Director of Environment, Health and Safety at Herman Miller, added, “As a founding member of the US Green Building Council, Herman Miller has always believed anything we can do to help make green building easier for everyone is a good thing. While our current LEED summary sheets provide the required information to manually calculate and submit a project to the USGBC, we recognize it is a time consuming effort. Herman Miller chose ecoScorecard to make the process easier and we hope that users find it a much more empowering experience.”

About Herman Miller, Inc.
Herman Miller works for a better world around you—with inventive designs, technologies and related services that improve the human experience wherever people work, heal, learn, and live. Its curiosity, ingenuity, and design excellence create award-winning products and services, resulting in more than $1.6 billion in revenue in fiscal 2009. Innovative business practices and a commitment to social responsibility have also established Herman Miller as a recognized global company. In 2010, Herman Miller was again cited by FORTUNE as the “Most Admired” in its industry and among the “100 Best Companies to Work For” in America, while Fast Company has named Herman Miller among its 2010 “Innovation All-Stars.” Herman Miller trades on the NASDAQ Global Select Market under the symbol MLHR and has been listed on the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index since 2004. For more information visit www.hermanmiller.com

The ecoScorecard space at Greenbuild 2009 in Phoenix, AZ was a hive of activity. Architects, designers and specifiers were delighted to find a free service that allowed them to search for green products, evaluate against any of the major rating systems and produce the required product documentation for those rating systems. Additionally, when manufacturers were able to step away from their own spaces, they were eager to stop by and see how they could sign up for the service.

And throughout the course of the show, third party rating services stopped by to discuss ways to partner with us. In effect, the ecoScorecard software is being viewed as an enabler to help get green building done.

Plug-In to Help Designers, Architects, Engineers, and Contractors Evaluate Environmental Attributes of Building Products

Phoenix, November 11, 2009 – ecoScorecard, the technology platform that helps building product specifiers evaluate environmental attributes of products, today revealed the new ecoScorecard plug-in that works with Google SketchUp and provides a critical link between popular BIM (Building Information Modeling) tools and important environmental rating systems such as LEED. The announcement was made today in conjunction with the opening of the US Green Building Council’s annual Greenbuild Expo.

The new integration will enable users to easily access environmental product attributes and rating system calculations for ecoScorecard enabled products that are in the Google 3D Warehouse, resulting in faster and more accurate rating system documentation for Google SketchUp users.

“The BIM process is built on the concept of coordinated information, and ecoScorecard takes that process a step further by providing an immediate to link to environmental product attributes and rating system calculations,” said Martin Flaherty, president of ecoScorecard. “Users can now pull data from ecoScorecard enabled products directly into the model and use that information throughout the design process.”

Introduced in 2007, ecoScorecard provides product specifiers with the ability to search and evaluate products based on environmental characteristics. The program does the calculations necessary for rating systems such as LEED, GGHC Labs 21, CHPS, and the NAHB Green Home Building Guidelines and includes and accounts for other third-party product certifications. The tool also produces the product documentation necessary for inclusion in the submission process. ecoScorecard is free to users and is supported by manufacturers interested in making the specification of green products easier for both their customers and their salespeople.

“Our original mission for ecoScorecard was to help make the specification of green products easier, and that has not changed,” explained Paul Shahriari, CEO of ecoScorecard. “Now, parallel to the growth of the green building movement, BIM is changing the entire building process. Never before has there been a single system that could provide context to all parties thinking about building. And the ecoScorecard technology platform is perfectly poised to link environmental product attributes and rating systems to BIM tools.”

Mr. Shahriari explained that ecoScorecard’s initial BIM integration was designed for Google SketchUp because of the accessibility and popularity of a Google tool. Plug-ins for other BIM tools such as Revit are slated for release next year.

About General Casework:
Based in Denver, General Casework builds environmentally-friendly frameless cabinets using materials that contain no added urea formaldehyde (NAUF) and come from plants that are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). These forests are monitored so that only a sustainable amount of wood is harvested, plus new trees are planted to regenerate the land for future generations to enjoy and harvest. Product lines include 4d Casework, for the educational and healthcare markets, and boks, a contemporary European-styled line of kitchen and bath for the residential market. Although General Casework products are available nationally, the company markets its products to specifiers within a 500 mile radius of its Denver facility in order to focus on service and more sustainable materials supply and distribution.

“The ecoScorecard platform provides a deeper level of functionality to our GreenSpec Directory,” explained Nadav Malin, President of BuildingGreen. “The value for our clients is having all of this information in one place.”

BuildingGreen’s online GreenSpec Directory will provide links to ecoScorecard sites; likewise, ecoScorecard will identify manufacturer’s products that are also listed in the GreenSpec Directory.

“We’ve built a system that makes product evaluation easier” said Martin Flaherty, President of ecoScorecard. ”And we’re excited to partner with BuildingGreen to offer ecoScorecard to their committed audience of green builders and product manufacturers.”

“We’d like to see manufacturers that are truly committed to sustainability work together to help simplify the product evaluation process for the architecture and design community, through platforms like ecoScorecard or other means. We need to eliminate the confusion around green building products,” said Malin, “and today BuildingGreen is taking that step with ecoScorecard.”

One Year After Debut, ecoScorecard Expands Manufacturer Database

Boston, GA, November 19, 2008— Launched at Greenbuild one year ago, ecoScorecard returns to the conference with 12 new manufacturers on board and a track record of success helping architects and designers identify and spec environmentally-sensitive products and materials.

Using a system of embedded algorithms, ecoScorecard lets manufacturers catalogue their green products and provide architects with the ability to search and evaluate each product based on its environmental characteristics. The program does the calculations necessary for 5 rating systems; LEED, GGHC Labs, CHPS, NAHB and third-party certifications; and produces the product documentation necessary for inclusion in the submission process.

Manufacturers new to the site include flooring providers Azrock, Bigelow, Bolyu, Cambridge, Designweave, Karastan, LEES, Patcraft, Roppe, Shaw Contract and Shaw Hospitality; furniture manufacturers el and HBF; wallcoverings by Novawall and textiles from HBF Textiles. They join Armstrong, J&J / Invision, and Kirei, among others, who have been on the site since its inception.

“We have had so much positive feedback from both manufacturers and architects who had been frustrated in the past by the amount of time and research required to investigate and spec green products,” said Martin Flaherty, founding partner, Viridity Inc., the Atlanta-based company that launched ecoScorecard. “We have responded by making upgrades to the site, adding more manufacturers and incorporating the specs of certification programs as they emerge and change.”

The algorithms for ecoScorecard were designed by Chief Technology Officer, David Carlson. “We realized that there was a critical need in the marketplace to bridge the information gap simply and inexpensively. So we created ecoScorecard for manufacturers to do just that.”

ecoScorecard is free for architects and designers to use and is paid for by manufacturers interested in displaying their products’ environmental attributes more simply.

ecoScorecard will be exhibiting at USGBC’s Green Build this year. ecoScorescard’s booth 2200, will feature group as well as individual demonstrations.
